Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s Disease causes more than half of all cases of dementia. Alzheimer’s Disease changes the structure and the chemistry in the brain and sticky lumps of protein build up around the brain cells and damages them. There is a great deal of research going on at the moment to identify what causes the brain to change in this way.

Symptoms may include:

  • Memory

Regularly forgetting names, faces, places and recent events.

  • Confusion

Uncertainty about days of the week, time of day, day and night.

  • Disorientation

Wandering, getting lost in familiar surroundings, unable to find way home or to get to familiar places.

  • Language

Problems finding the right words.

  • Mood and Behaviour

Some people become disinterested in what is happening around them. They may become irritable, argumentative, aggressive or lose self confidence.

The most important thing to remember is that each person who is diagnosed with dementia will have a unique journey, no two people with dementia have exactly the same set of experiences.
